Time is running out!

Covered California’s Open Enrollment deadline is 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, January 31, 2021. If you select a healthcare plan by then, you will have coverage effective February 1, 2021.

Covered California is a health insurance marketplace established under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), where eligible individuals and small businesses can buy health insurance coverage at federally subsidized rates.

Covered California and Medi-Cal use the same application. This means that once you apply, you’ll find out which program you qualify for. Some households qualify for both.

If you have questions, or prefer to apply by phone, call toll-free 1-800-300-1506. Covered California is offering extended hours leading up to the end of Open Enrollment, from 8:00 am to 12:00 am on Saturday, January 30 and Sunday, January 31.

In partnership with Mendocino County Public Health and Adventist Health, local community health clinics have vaccinated more than 2,400 Mendocino County residents. In Boonville, Anderson Valley Health Center vaccinated 570 people. In Willits, Baechtel Creek Medical Clinic vaccinated 30, representing all the vaccine they received from the County. In North County, Long Valley Health Center vaccinated 220. On the coast, Mendocino Coast Clinics (MCC) vaccinated 675 people and Redwood Coast Medical Services vaccinated 905.

“Despite scarcity of the vaccine, once the county has provided it, the clinics have mobilized to get their communities vaccinated,” said MCC Executive Director Lucresha Renteria.

Community health centers are well-positioned to connect with the people first in line for the vaccine and have been following County guidance to this effect. The County’s vaccine distribution plan can be found at www.mendocinocounty.org/community/novel-coronavirus/covid-19-vaccinations. The phased approach gives preference to healthcare workers, people 75 and older, and people in essential job sectors such as education, childcare, emergency services, and food and agriculture.

The County’s access to both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines is limited, and community health clinics can only distribute what they receive. Renteria is hopeful that with additional federal funding to increase vaccine production and distribution, local supplies will increase. Until then, she encourages people to continue to follow safety measures such as masking and social distancing.

Another way to limit the spread of COVID-19 is continued surveillance testing, available countywide from private healthcare providers, community health clinics, and Public Health. Testing is available at no charge on the coast by appointment at MCC and through OptumServe on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. at the Veterans’ Hall at 360 N. Harrison Street in Fort Bragg where tests are first come, first serve. Inland free testing is available daily from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. through OptumServe at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds located at 1055 N. State Street in Ukiah. For OptumServe testing, people should register online at lhi.care/covidtesting before arriving to get a Patient ID Number.

Here at MCC, we are honored to be part of the program to vaccinate our community against COVID-19. So far, we have held two very successful vaccine clinics, and we are so happy to give our community a #shotofhope. We understand that many people in our community are anxious to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. But we must follow the Mendocino County Public Health guidelines in giving the vaccines. See the attached chart for more information on these guidelines.

Yesterday, January 20, we started to vaccinate our patients who are 75 and up who have also been diagnosed with diabetes, or COPD, or obesity. These people are the most vulnerable to having severe complications from the virus.

Once these patients have been vaccinated, we will start vaccinating our patients by age, from 100 on down.

If you are not an MCC patient, contact your healthcare provider to let him or her know you are interested in receiving the vaccine. If your healthcare provider is not participating in the vaccine program, please register on www.vaccinatemendo.com.

This site gathers information that we can use to alert people to an upcoming clinic or schedule the appointments for the vaccine. Remember: vaccine supplies are still very limited, so we must watch carefully how we are going through the lists.

Throughout the pandemic, our priority here at MCC has been keeping our patients, community, and staff safe. With that in mind, we’re hitting the pause button on this year’s Crab & Wine celebration.

As the number of COVID cases rises throughout the county and on the coast, we decided it would be safer to wait until spring to hold our annual fundraiser.

Although we were planning a virtual event, a team of 10 needs to be in one location in order to produce it, including cameramen, chefs, and hosts. Given the current situation, this did not seem safe or advisable, even with all the participants masked and physically distant.

On Friday, January 15, MCC and Adventist Health partnered up for our very first public COVID-19 vaccine clinic, where we vaccinated local teachers. It was inspiring to see our school staff get a #shotofhope and take a giant step toward getting our kids back in the classroom.

Since it was the first time we did an event like this, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but it went off without a hitch. Fort Bragg High School generously gave us the use of their gym, where there was plenty of room for parking, registration, vaccinations, and physical distancing for post-vaccine monitoring. It could not have gone better!

MCC’s Executive Director, Lucresha Renteria said, “MCC’s team truly delivered today. We got 300 school employees along the North Coast vaccinated.”

Huge thanks to our friends at Adventist Health for providing nursing staff and having an EMT on site, and to Fort Bragg Unified School District for handling the scheduling. It was an amazing team effort! Thank you to all who helped to make it happen.

We are glad to see that our community is welcoming the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine with open arms and sleeves rolled up! We understand that many of you are anxious to receive the vaccine, but it is being rolled out according to a tier system:

The County is distributing vaccines according to the regulations and guidelines currently in place. MCC does not have a waiting list for those interested in receiving the vaccine, nor do we have a supply of vaccine on hand.

We are vaccinating our local teachers today. These are the 300 vaccines referred to in this week’s editions of The Mendocino Beacon and the Fort Bragg Advocate-News, and they will all be used at this event. This is a big step toward our children being able to return to in person learning later this year.

We will be contacting our patients aged 75 and up when we have a supply of vaccine to start giving it to these patients. If you are not an MCC patient, contact your healthcare provider and ask if they are participating in the vaccine program. If they are, your healthcare provider will notify you when they are ready to vaccinate you. If not, contact Mendocino County Public Health at 707-472-2663 to let them know you are interested in receiving the vaccine when it is available.

We are continuing our free, drive-through surveillance testing on Wednesdays from 9 am to 1 pm, and Thursdays from 1 pm to 5 pm. Give us a call at 707 964 1251 to make an appointment.
