Our 21st annual Crab, Wine, & Beer Days fundraiser brought us a lot of sunshine and dollars! We raised $150,000 gross and we are still counting!

Former Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman is not only NOT retired from our event, he lit up the stage as our auctioneer – and steered the Fund-the-Future Pledge Drive – just hours before his own retirement party. That is dedication!

This year’s Fund-the-Future beneficiary was MCC’s Open Door clinic, created for the specific and unique needs of our LGBTQ+ patients. The Live Auction was filled with get-aways and rare large format Mendocino Wine bottles, including an amazing wine and lodging package donated by our friends at @ [288905447844446:274:Destination Hopland].

Both events were sell outs at 500 attendees each. Supporters traveled here from all over California and 10 different states, as far away as Rhode Island, Florida, Maryland, and Georgia.

Thank you to our hard-working and dedicated staff and volunteers (and staff who volunteered) – you make the event possible and our guests feel welcome!

Mark your calendars for next year’s events – they sell out quickly! The Cioppino Dinner will be on Friday, January 29, 2021 and the Crab Cake Cook Off will be on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Online sales open on October 15, 2020. See you there! #cwb2020 #cwb2021

We will be closed on Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 17, to honor the birthdays of our great Presidents Lincoln and Washington.

Here are some fun facts for Presidents’ Day:

– Four Presidents were born in February: Washington (22), Lincoln (12), Harrison (9), and Reagan (6). February is a presidential month!

– President Harrison died just 32 days after becoming president, the shortest term of any president. He caught a cold during the pouring rain at his inauguration and it turned to pneumonia. It may not have helped that his inaugural address, at 2 hours, was the longest on record.

– The tallest President was Abraham Lincoln, at 6 feet, 4 inches, and James Madison was the shortest, exactly a foot shorter than Lincoln.

– James Madison and George Washington are the only presidents who signed the Constitution.

We will be open again on Tuesday, February 18. If you need us during the long weekend, or any time, just call (707) 964-1251 and the on call clinician will be happy to help you. We are always here for you, 24/7/365! #bestcareanywhere

Don’t forget: your friends and neighbors are selling their fresh local produce at the Fort Bragg Certified Farmers Market every Wednesday from 3:00 to 5:00!

It doesn’t matter if it’s cold, or raining, or windy – the Market is indoors from November through April, so you can stay warm and cozy as you shop for locally grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, and more!

If you are a CalFresh recipient, you will be glad to know that the Market participates in Market Match, which doubles your CalFresh spending power at the Farmers’ Market.

So come on down to the Old Recreation Center at City Hall, at the corner of Laurel and Franklin Streets and enjoy the fun at the Farmers’ Market! #stayhealthywithus

It’s a good thing you’re already sweet enough, since this month’s wellness challenge is to cut back on added sugar.

Men should consume no more than 150 discretionary calories of sugar per day. This is equivalent to 38 g or 9 teaspoons of sugar. Women and children should use no more than 100 discretionary calories on sugar per day. This is around 25 g or 6 teaspoons of sugar.

Our Registered Dietitian tells us that added sugars are sugars or caloric sweeteners that manufacturers put in foods or drinks. Added sugars can be natural or chemically manufactured.

Examples of natural sugars that manufacturers add to provide sweetness include honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar.

Even fructose and lactose qualify as added sugars in many processed foods.

Examples of added sugars to look for on food labels include:

• refined white sugar
• brown sugar
• raw sugar
• invert sugar
• malt sugar
• coconut sugar
• molasses
• syrup
• maple syrup
• corn syrup
• high-fructose corn syrup
• corn sweetener
• honey
• fruit juice concentrates
• sugar molecules ending in “ose,” such as fructose, glucose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, and sucrose

So skip the candy aisle and head to the produce aisle this month. You can do it! #behealthywithus
