We are excited to welcome back our patients to in-person care in the South Street medical department. Our Pediatrics and Women’s Health locations returned to in person care some time ago (or never stopped providing it) and it is time to bring our adult medical patients back in. It’s been nearly a year since we have seen most of our patients and we are looking forward to seeing you again!

Of course, your visit will be a little different than it used to be. Here’s how it will work:

Medical and Dental patients will enter through the main clinic lobby doors and there will be two of our staff either outside the building (weather permitting) or inside the lobby doors to screen you for COVID symptoms and contact. If there has been any, you will be sent to your car to have a video visit for medical, and if you are here for dental, you will be re-scheduled.
If you are cleared to enter the building, you will receive a sticker showing you are approved to be there, along with a mask. You will then be directed to check in at the reception desk.
Once you have checked in, you will return to your car, and the medical or dental assistant will call you when we are ready to see you. If you do not have a car or a phone and/or have mobility issues, you will sit in our lobby.

When the visit is complete, you will check out at reception and exit the lobby through the main doors.

We are continuing to strictly follow all protocols to keep our patients and staff safe, as we have throughout the pandemic. We are looking forward to seeing you soon! #bestcareanywhere

Our Public Health Officer has made some changes, effective immediately, to the eligibility criteria for vaccines. See below for more information.

Phase 1A all tiers, continuing
Phase 1B Food/Agriculture/Logging, Education/Childcare (including all schools, school bus drivers, and formal/informal childcare workers), Emergency Services, 65 and Over, continuing

LODGING is now eligible.

People ages 16-64 years old with the following conditions are also now eligible to receive the vaccine:

Chronic Kidney Disease (stage 4 or over)
Chronic Lung Disease (oxygen dependent)
Cancer
Heart disease (Coronary Artery Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathies, NOT hypertensive only)
Immunocompromised state (from chemotherapy, or medical conditions)
Diabetes (Hb A1c >7.5)
Severe Obesity (BMI >40)
Sickle Cell Disease
Pregnancy
Chronic Disabilities (physical or mental)

If you are eligible to receive the vaccine, please call us at 964-1251 or email us at info@mccinc.org to be put on the waitlist. We ask that you only call or email once, in order to avoid duplicate requests or more than one of our staff responding to your call or email.

We are planning to give 90 second doses and 300 first doses on Thursday, March 4. We are starting to fill the schedule from the waitlist, starting with people aged 65 and up, so remember to answer your phones in case it’s us, trying to schedule you for a vaccine. So far, MCC has given 2,996 vaccines! We are so glad to give a #shotofhope to our community!

Smile! We are celebrating our amazing dental staff this week! The first full week in March marks Dental Assistant Week and Dentist’s Day, a time to thank these caring, highly skilled professionals for all they do to keep our patients’ smiles brighter and healthier.

We appreciate our dental staff’s hard work, cheerful smiles, and the way they make every patient, from the youngest to the oldest, feel comfortable and cared for during their visit.

On Friday night, February 19, we were surprised to receive an offer of 800 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. On Saturday, the MCC team jumped into action, making calls to businesses in the approved tiers and community members eligible for the vaccine. We love a good challenge, especially one that serves our community!

The week of February 22, MCC held vaccine clinics four out of five days. The clinics on Tuesday and Friday were large, 400-vaccine events, targeting people aged 65 years and older, emergency medical responders, school and childcare staff, food workers and agricultural workers. Appointments were required, and all slots are filled for this week, including standbys.

So far, MCC has given 2,593 vaccines, including this week’s events. We are so happy to do this for our community, and are looking forward to doing more vaccine clinics as the supply allows.

If no appointments are available at the time, you will be put on a waiting list, and we will call you when we have an appointment available.

Just like this week, we often get little notice of when we will receive vaccines, so please answer your phones. It might be us, offering you a #shotofhope!

We were both happy and humbled to receive this beautiful card (by local artist Jon Klein) from a grateful patient, describing her experience of receiving the vaccine from MCC staff earlier this month:

“On February 4th, I got a surprise call at 7:30 pm from staff at Mendocino Coast Clinics offering me a 2:15 pm slot in Friday’s Covid vaccination clinic at the Mormon Church. When I arrived at the first station to pick up paperwork I was suddenly overwhelmed to the point of tears which surprised me. “I’m so grateful” I said. At the next station a young male LVN, Alex, quietly said, “Breathe in and now breathe out slowly” as he pinched my upper arm and gave me a painless injection.

On to the next volunteer who wrote the time on my windshield and told me where to park. The volunteer Suzan assigned to watch for reaction chatted with me about her career as a midwife, and then a friend from church drove up and we talked about the amazing clockwork coordination by your staff and volunteers. We both agreed we felt joy, gratitude and hope after this long pandemic. It was more like a community celebration than a vaccination clinic. Truly, thank you.”

Our County is in the process of transitioning to a new database for COVID-19 vaccination requests, http://myturn.ca.gov. The County will use this database to register people for vaccination events. The database is open, and you can register your vaccine request now.

Even if you are already registered on vaccinatemendo.com, you should still register on http://myturn.ca.gov, since it will soon replace all other databases of vaccine requests for our County.

If you do not have an email address or a mobile phone to register on http://myturn.ca.gov, please call the state’s COVID hotline at 833-422-4255.

At MCC, we are honored to serve our community in any way we can. We are especially glad to provide ongoing, no cost COVID-19 surveillance testing and vaccinations to coastal residents. It is inspiring to share a #shotofhope with our community.

Currently, we are vaccinating those aged 75 and up, those at high risk for serious complications or mortality, and food service and agricultural workers, in accordance with the tier system. There are several hundreds of people who meet these parameters, so we ask for your patience and understanding as we vaccinate the most vulnerable members of our community first.

We know that many of you are wondering when it’s going to be your turn. Last week, we vaccinated more than 250 seniors aged 75 and up, with a few food service workers from our standby list. We were scheduling people in their 90s and mid-80s last week as we worked through the existing list of 2,500 people 75 and up. This week, we are only doing second doses, no first doses.

As for next week, that’s anyone’s guess. We never know how many vaccines we will receive, or on what day. We often have only 24 hours’ notice to call hundreds of people to set up appointments. MCC’s supply of vaccines comes from Mendocino County Public Health, and their supply comes from the State. The entire state of California is experiencing a shortage of vaccines, and that impacts our county and our clinic.

On the bright side, MCC has vaccinated more than 1,000 coastal residents so far, with our patients representing about half of these. Overall, 12,000 of Mendocino County’s 90,000 residents have been vaccinated so far. We are looking forward to continuing to vaccinate our community as supplies of the vaccines and the designated tiers allow.
